Valery Nemytov, Minister of Transport and Roads of the Khabarovsk Territory, spoke about the upcoming merger of the ports of Vanino and Sovetskaya Gavan into a single transport hub at a meeting at the council meeting under the governor of the Khabarovsk Territory on export support. The solution of this issue, according to the minister, is scheduled for 2020. A set of measures for the unification of ports was developed jointly with the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation and the administration of ports.

The Free Port of Vanino is one of the largest stevedoring companies in the Far East. A railway branch line has been laid to the port, connecting it with BAM and Transsib. The port's cargo turnover is more than 30 million tons per year. From here loads are delivered to China, the states of Southeast Asia, the USA and other countries. Projects of port expansion, modernization of its coal terminal were considered. Chinese businessmen and officials have repeatedly expressed their willingness to invest in these projects. To simplify the delivery of goods from China to the port was supposed Lidoga-Vanino highway, but the quality of construction and location of the route buried these hopes. The road between Vanino and Sovetskaya Gavan also needs repair and a new drainage system.

The port of Sovetskaya Gavan specializes in transshipment of bulk, general, timber and oil cargo and seafood. Its capacity is 600 thousand tons per year.
